Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care system that is based upon the philosophy that when balanced, the human body should be in a perfect state of health. This because inherently, we all contain the blueprint for it. It is the role of a naturopathic physician to bring the body back to this fundamental state by addressing the root cause of illness through supportive modalities that stimulate the healing power of nature. This is much different than symptom-based treatment, which looks to suppress unfavorable “warning signals” that the body sends us to alert that something is wrong. Instead, the human body is viewed holistically and disease is seen as a process, rather than an isolated circumstance or entity. With this perspective, treatment plans are formed to consider the entire individual - physically, mentally/emotionally, spiritually/energetically, to optimize health and prevent disease. In addition to diet and lifestyle changes, naturopathic therapies include: botanical/herbal medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, traditional Chinese medicine/acupuncture, naturopathic manipulation (chiropractic) and homeopathy.
